From the BBC:
Twelve people were killed by a gunman who went on the rampage across Cumbria in north-west England.
Taxi driver Derrick Bird shot dead a colleague in the town of Whitehaven, before driving through the countryside apparently targeting people at random.
This is the worst incident since the Dunblane massacre in 1996 in Scotland. Police say that the shooter committed suicide after using two weapons to kill and injure apparently at random.
There is no known motive at the time.
From the BBC again:
Mr Bird, 52, of Rowrah, is said to be divorced with two sons and known as "Birdy". Locals say he recently became a grandfather for the first time.
Several accounts have described him as "quiet", "popular" and "a laugh".
And yet something made him take the life of a friend in the first shooting, before embarking on a deadly rampage.
It is still too early to speculate on what may have caused this quiet man to go on a murderous rampage, but at this time please join me in giving our best wishes to the bereaved.
